THE CHARITIES OF THOMAS BATES
Thomas Bates (1844 – 1903) was born and educated in Little Eaton and is buried in the Churchyard. During his lifetime he had a very successful business career in London during the latter half of the 19th century. However he never forgot his native village and in his will he bequeathed various monies to the village to be used for specific purposes and administered by a Trust. He purchased the land which is now St Peter’s Park and some of his bequest was used to purchase the three almshouses on Vicarage Lane which are still administered and maintained by the Trust.

The Bates Trust has evolved over the years and the current trustees comprise, among others, representatives of the Parish Council, the local churches, the local school as well as a local doctor and a county councillor.

As well as the almshouses the Trustees are also responsible for providing grants for individuals or organizations in the village who may require financial assistance.

Applications for any such assistance should be made in writing to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Janet Easter 353 Alfreton Road Little Eaton DE21 5AE. She will also answer any questions about the Trust or refer you to a Trustee.
